It’s a difficult time for the faith of the church, because we have the feeling that the old formulations won’t quite do, but we are reluctant to give them up. When we ease off for a moment, we revert easily and comfortably to those formulations. It is an equally tricky time in Old Testament scholarship because the scholarly consensus of the last decade is now showing cracks and seams and threatening to collapse.
