Walter Brueggemann puts forth a “fresh hearing of the gospel” communicated in Old Testament tradition. Brueggemann focuses on how we neglect how the Bible affirms human culture, capability, and responsibility as a part of the biblical narrative and gospel story. He zooms in on the book of Proverbs and the wisdom traditions it contains that affirm the world and celebrate culture.

It’s a difficult time for the faith of the church, because we have the feeling that the old formulations won’t quite do, but we are reluctant to give them up. When we ease off for a moment, we revert easily and comfortably to those formulations. It is an equally tricky time in Old Testament scholarship because the scholarly consensus of the last decade is now showing cracks and seams and threatening to collapse. It is a wrenching time to try to be human—our problems seem so unmanageable
